Millennium Development Goals?
The Millennium Development Goals or MDGs are eight goals that
should seriously reduce poverty and hunger in the world. They were
drafted by the United Nations and signed in 2000 by 191 countries,
which promised to achieve the MDGs within a time frame of 15 years.
The first seven goals are measurable goals concerning subjects such
as poverty, education, equal opportunities for men and women,
health and a sustainable environment. The eighth goal is about
setting up a global partnership for development. This last MDG
contains targets that the ‘wealthy’ North must commit
to fair trade, debt relief and more and better aid, in order
to support the 'poorer' South to achieve the rest of the goals.
